Craft | Sweet Potato Vines

Alex Sweet Potato

Did you know that yams and sweet potatoes are the same thing? Ok, so the sweet orange tubular root vegetable we call a yam is actually a sweet potato. But here are also white sweet potatoes and golden/yellow and… Um, ya, I’m not writing an exposé on this! I just wanted to post that sweet potato vines make a beautiful house/patio plant and that my granddaughter and I have each started a potato. I’ll be sure and post updates on their progress!

Instructions

What you’ll need…

  • 1 firm sweet potato
  • approximately 6 cocktail sticks
  • a clean, deep glass jar (that your potato will fit in)
  • fresh water

What to do with it…

  1. Hold your potato root/skinny side down and poke the cocktail sticks in about a quarter of the way down. Then place it into the jar and fill the jar up with fresh water almost to the top. Put your potato in a sunny window inside or a place outside that gets lots of light but little to no direct sun.
  2. Change the water completely every few days, and never let the water get below half way. You should see your potato grow roots and sprout in two weeks or less.
  3. When the potato is growing a lot of vines/leafs and has lots of roots, you can plant it into a pot with dirt, or into the ground.

Below is my starter potato, I gave him a face. Yes, yes I am strange.
