Hand weights are not that expensive but they are a waste of money if you never used them! I am guilty of buying exercise equipment with the best of intentions and then letting it sit and gather dust.
So, if you make a few homemade hand weights and don’t use them you’ll be out very little cash, but if you do use them you’ll feel better about making an investment in a decent set.
I’ve put this in the craft section of my blog, but you really don’t need any skill to make these.
What I Used…
- Scale
- 2 of the same plastic drink bottles, comfortable to hold with one hand
- Funnel
- 2 lbs of dry uncooked rice
- Glue (optional)
- Duct tape (optional)
- Permanent marker (optional)
How I Did It…
- Remove the labels, and wash/dry the bottles.
- Place the first bottle on the scale and insert the funnel, zero it out (reset to 0).
- Pour in 1 lb of rice, and repeat with the second bottle.
- If using glue, glue on the lids. Otherwise, screw the lids on very tightly.
- Wrap the middle of the bottle with duct tape.
- Write the amount of weight on the cap of each bottle.
Makes 2 x 1 lb. Hand Weights
Notes
- Use larger, but easy to hold bottles with more rice, to create heavier weights.
- Sand, dry beans, and fish tank pebbles are good things to use instead of rice. Just be sure that the bottle and the filling work well together so there is not lots of extra space or not enough room.
- I personally don’t care to drink them, but the bottles that Sparkling ICE drinks come in are slim and easy to hold. So, they make nice homemade weights. That’s what I used in the photo.
